CPTED Mini-Grants Awarded to Neighborhood Groups

CPTED Winners, LCSCThe LCSC is pleased to announce the winners of our first neighborhood Mini-Grants! On June 2nd, I had the pleasure of awarding grants and recognizing applicants for their efforts during a brief ceremony at LCSC offices. Individuals and groups submitted applications for single grants of $250, $500, $750 and $1000 to promote Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) in their neighborhoods.

A committee of the LCSC board evaluated applications and made awards to four Neighborhood Project Coordinators and/or their partnering nonprofit agency. Please join me in congratulating the winners:

  • Alexandra Clayton of Emerald Drive ($250)-lighting project
  • Faith Tabernacle Transformation Development Corp. of South Ann Street ($500)-Area Maintenance project
  • Jessica King of South Shippen Street ($750)-Light Up and Weed Out project
  • St. Andrews United Church of Christ of North Lime Street ($1000)-Neighbors United project.

The mini-grant process was developed to foster community involvement and promote pride with practical advice for a safer neighborhood. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design or CPTED (pronounced “SEP-TED”) involves using space and the environment to deter criminal behavior and is practiced by communities around the world.

CPTED includes elements of criminology, psychology, architecture, landscaping and urban planning. Mini-grant winners will use at least one of CPTED’s four basic principles in their projects:

    1. Natural Surveillance to arrange the placement of physical features, activities and people in a way that maximizes visibility
    2. Natural Access Control to guide people entering and leaving a space through the placement of entrances, exits, fences, landscaping or lighting
    3. Territorial Reinforcement to use physical attributes that express ownership such as fences, signage, landscaping, lighting or pavement designs that help defined property lines and makes clear distinctions between private and public spaces
    4. Area Maintenance to present a well maintained home, building or community, and create a sense of ownership.

Applicants were encouraged to partner with a nonprofit organization, although the LCSC will serve as the partnering agency for winning applicants who were unable to identify a partner prior to the May 14th submission deadline. Coordinators and volunteers for each of the grantees will complete their CPTED projects between June 21st and July 18th.
