Community Groups Encouraged to Apply for Mini-Grants
The Lancaster Community Safety Coalition (LCSC) will award four competitive mini-grants totaling $2,500 to creative community groups committed to completing a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) project in their neighborhoods this summer. Single grants of $1000, $750, $500 and $250 each will be awarded.
Fostering community involvement and promoting pride with practical advice for a safer neighborhood is the goal. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design or CPTED (pronounced “SEP-TED”) involves using space and the environment to deter criminal behavior. The application of CPTED involves elements of criminology, psychology, architecture, landscaping and urban planning. Still, it can be as simple as screwing in a porch light bulb, trimming hedges or installing a front-door peephole.
A number of nonprofit agencies including the James Street Improvement District and the Weed & Seed program will partner with neighborhood groups to submit mini-grant applications. An LCSC board sub-committee headed by Lancaster City Police Captain Steve Skiles will evaluate submitted proposals and awards will be announced in June.
In addition, there will be a workshop on CPTED at the coalition offices, 262 Conestoga St., at 7 p.m. April 29. To learn about CPTED, visit the CPTED section of our website.
Sincerely,
