A combination of Lancaster police detective work and the eye of a Lancaster Community Safety Coaltion video camera helped police capture a suspected gunman shortly after an early morning shooting Saturday.

lcscSeen on camera firing a gun in the 100 block of Conestoga Street, and then fleeing in a vehicle with another person, Tomas Eliu Hernandez, 22, of Lancaster was arrested a little more than an hour after the shooting.

At about 2:20 a.m. police were called to Mye's Corner Lounge & Bar, South Prince and Conestoga Streets, for a shooting.

A fight in the bar preceded the shooting, police said. Police did not say whether Hernandez was involved in the fight, but did say durig the fight he shot a 30-year-old Lancaster man.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery.

The bullet went in and out of the man's body, a police spokesman said. The wound was not life-threatening.

Police are not naming the victim or the hospital he was sent out of concern it could jeopardize the safety of the victim and the investigation.

When Hernandez left the bar he fired additional gunshots outside, which police said were caught on camera.

The camera then caught Hernandez fleeing with another individual in a vehicle.

From the video camera footage police were able to identify the vehicle.

Shortly after 3:15 a.m. Officer Paul Blanchflower found the vehicle parked and unoccupied in the 100 block of College Ave.

Blanchflower staked out the vehicle and shortly after 3:30 a.m. he saw two people leave a residence in the area and enter the vehicle.

Both people were arrested, one of whom was Hernandez.

After spending much of the day interviewing witnesses, processing the crime scene and conducting searches, police charged Hernandez with aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm, recklessly endangering another person and possession of heroin.

City police said that without the video camera the case would not have "come to such a successful conclusion."
