Mobilizing the Community

Joe Morales

Mobilizing the Community enhances the success of the LCSC’s other services through a network of residents and businesses working together to accomplish highly visible neighborhood projects. A mobilized community eliminates problem properties, reduces crime and disorder, and enhances property values. The Coalition offers a creative way of remedying problem properties by using a wide variety of civil remedies.

In June of 2007, a Special Report in the Wall Street Journal highlighted the link between effective crime fighting and successful economic growth.  “It may sound simple, but city after city has found that getting crime under control is the crucial foundation to stimulating economic development”, said Jennifer Forsyth, author of the report.  Ms. Forsyth describes the successes experienced in what was once a high-crime Washington D.C. neighborhood.   It is this same “low-crime/high investor confidence” strategy that drives the Lancaster Community Safety Coalition (LCSC).

While it is important that the residents and business in the City support us, it is equally important for those who reside or work outside the City to see the value in a strong LCSC. An organization that enhances the safety and quality of life in Lancaster City is vital to everyone in Lancaster County. Why?

  • The LCSC can positively affect all those who work, shop or attend events downtown, including our families, friends and neighbors.
  • A strong LCSC can help make current and prospective homeowners feel more secure about City Life, which helps support property values and a strong tax base.
  • A strong LCSC can help support tourism, by encouraging visitors to stay downtown and walk to our many restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.
  • A strong LCSC can help influence businesses considering a relocation to Lancaster City -- bringing jobs and more stability for everyone.

“It’s important that everyone help watch
their neighbors and their homes,
especially if they are out of town or
at work. This, in addition to the cameras and the police, will make a much safer neighborhood.”
