Violent crime falls 13.7 percent in Lancaster city; Mayor credits police, cameras
Violent crime in Lancaster city fell dramatically in 2009, after spiking midway through the decade, and minor offenses, including burglaries and thefts, dropped to their lowest level in modern history, according to FBI data. The dispute between the two men was captured on Lancaster Community Safety Coalition surveillance cameras. That was an enormous help to detectives in the investigation, police said.

The star witness in a homicide hearing Friday was a security camera recording.
A brief but deadly encounter between two young men last August on Marietta Avenue was captured by a Lancaster Community Safety Coalition camera and shown in a court proceeding Friday.

Safety Coalition Camera Helps Police ID Suspect; Also Helps Locate Discarded Handgun
A Lancaster Community Safety Coalition camera helped police find a discarded handgun and identify a suspect after a fight, city police said.

Additional Results from 2010

Fugitive Captured: Lancaster Police informed LCSC Camera System Operators of a property where a fugitive was reported to be.  All persons entering were documented and it was determined what house the reported fugitive was at and that he was in fact there.  He was then taken into custody by Police. (October 2010)

Vehicle Break-in: A vehicle break in progress was reported to County 911. LCSC cameras spotted the suspects running away from the area and LCSC staff was able to direct Police to the area where they were seen. Police were able to apprehend both suspects and they were arrested for the break in. (September 2010)

Missing Children: Police received a call about two children, ages 9 and 11 years of age who had gone for a walk and were reported to be missing. The children were visiting from out of town and were not familiar with the City. LCSC cameras spotted the two within a short time and directed Police to their whereabouts.  They were reunited with their family a short time later. (September 2010)

Warrants: A subject who was wanted by Police was spotted by LCSC cameras.  LCSC Staff notified Police and directed them to her location were the suspect was taken into custody. (September 2010)

Handgun:  LCSC cameras spotted two people on a street corner and noticed that one person handed the other a handgun. LCSC Staff called County 911 and directed Police to the location. When the Police arrived the person gave the Police the bag he put the gun in to. Police retrieved the handgun and he was charged with the offense. (August 2010)

Threats:  A person was reported for making terroristic threats but fled the area before Police arrived. The vehicle was spotted a short time later by LCSC cameras and the information was relayed to the police who located the vehicle and took the suspect into custody. (July 2010)

Drugs:  Four drug arrests were made of people spotted by LCSC cameras. These people were observed to be using drugs in a city park. (July 2010)

Shoplifting:  LCSC cameras spotted a person that was suspected of shoplifting minutes after it was reported at a local drugstore.  LCSC employees alerted Police to his whereabouts and store employees positively identified him as the person responsible and an arrest was made. (July 2010)

Assault:  An LCSC Camera System Operator spotted a person being assaulted in the early morning hours. A car was seen leaving the area and the license number was provided to the Police. The car was stopped a few minutes later and one subject was arrested on an outstanding warrant. (July 2010)

Drug Usage: A Camera System Operator observed two people engaged in a possible drug activity in a local park late at night and reported the activity to County dispatch.  When Police arrived they found drugs, paraphernalia and one of the subjects was wanted for an armed robbery in Harrisburg. (June 2010)

Pursuit: Police were involved in a foot pursuit where the suspect was getting away.  LCSC cameras spotted the suspect and advised Police of his location.  The suspect was caught and taken into custody. (June 2010)

Robbery: LCSC video helped Police in a robbery which occurred in the early morning hours. Review of video showed the suspects in the area. (June 2010)

Vehicle Break-in: LCSC received a request from police to review video for a vehicle that had been broken into.  The review shows two subjects in and around the vehicle. Police subsequently stopped these two individuals and they were charged with breaking into the vehicle. (May 2010)

Burglary:  Police were dispatched to an alarm at a local business and LCSC cameras spotted a subject leaving from the rear of the establishment.   A Camera System Operator was able to give police a description of the person and a direction of travel.  He was also seen to have dumped some stolen items.  Police found the suspect and recovered the stolen items, he was charged for the burglary and arrested. (May 2010)

Robbery:  A robbery was reported to Police and within a short time of this call LCSC cameras spotted the suspects who were all taken into custody and charged for the robbery. (May 2010)

Vandalism:  Police were dispatched to a call for a domestic dispute.  While enroute LCSC cameras spotted the suspect leaving the area and vandalizing a vehicle.  A Camera System Operator directed police to his location and he was charged with this crime. (May 2010)

Vehicle Theft:  Police were responding to a call for a vehicle theft.  They spotted the vehicle and proceeded to follow the suspect.  He then fled from police in the vehicle and police broke off the pursuit.  LCSC cameras followed the suspect and vehicle to a point where he bailed out of the car and ran on foot.  A Camera System Operator directed police to his location where he was taken into custody. (May 2010)

Warrants:  LCSC called in a possible drug violation in a local park.  Police determined one of the subjects was wanted on outstanding warrants and was taken into custody. (May 2010)

Shooting:  LCSC cameras witnessed two men fighting which resulted in a fatal shooting. Video helped identify the suspect who was then charged and taken into custody. (April 2010)

Assault:  Two people who had been reported to the police for assault were spotted by LCSC cameras. The Camera System Operator reported their location to County 911. Police were dispatched and stopped the individuals and filed charges. (April 2010)

Charges Dropped: Police requested video evidence for an incident where a gun  was allegedly pointed at another person.  Video proved the alleged assailant was not in the area and charges were dropped; that individual was then released from Police custody. (March 2010)

Vehicle Theft: A car matching the description of a reported stolen vehicle was spotted by a Camera System Operator who notified police of its location.  Police confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen and recovered the car.  It was returned to the owner within 24 hours of its reported theft. (March 2010)       

Vandalism: A person wanted by police for numerous acts of alleged vandalism was observed in the area where the vandalism occurred.  A Camera System Operator reported the person to police and monitored his movement until police were able to stop and detain him.  He has been charged with over 20 counts of vandalism. (March 2010)

Fight: A fight was called into Countywide Communications (911).  While police were in route to the incident, LCSC staff observed one of the subjects leaving the scene.  Police were notified and directed to his location.  He was stopped by police who learned that he had outstanding warrants and the suspect was taken into custody. (March 2010)

Domestic Violence: A subject who was involved in a domestic disturbance where he allegedly beat a woman was reported to the police. He was spotted by a LCSC Camera System Operator who reported his location to County 911. Cameras followed him until officers were able to take him into custody. (February 2010)

Fight: LCSC staff placed several calls to County 911 for fights outside of a local bar at closing time which resulted in many arrests over several nights. Timely calls from LCSC enabled police to respond quickly keeping the fights from escalating into more serious situations. (February 2010)

Hit and Run: A Camera System Operator was reviewing video for a hit and run, during the review the camera operator found that the vehicle had also knocked over a utility pole in the area of a local hospital. Additional charges were filed against the driver based on this information provided by the LCSC. (February 2010)

Assault: Video provided to City Police positively identified two subjects who were allegedly involved in an assault on another person. Police were in the LCSC offices reviewing video with LCSC staff when the two suspects were stopped and detained. The officer reviewing video was able to make a positive identification and the suspects were taken into custody and charged with the assault. (January 2010)
